‘Ban the Batistas’ Coalition Reiterates Urgency to Halt JBS’s Antitrust Actions and Prevent U.S. IPO

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (December 11, 2023) – JBS SA, the world’s largest meat producer with a notorious track record of environmental degradation and anti-competitive practices, is attempting to salvage its image through a greenwashing campaign at the COP28 summit in Dubai. Criticized for contributing significantly to the meat industry’s carbon footprint and wielding monopolistic influence, the company’s efforts to present itself as environmentally conscious and supportive of small businesses are misleading and deceptive.

For a company with a net worth of over $10 billion, JBS’s $8.7 million investment in the Eastern Amazon Fund, touted as a sustainability initiative, is viewed by Ban the Batistas as a feeble attempt to mask its history of environmental harm and market dominance. Despite claims that the investment will benefit small producers, Ban the Batistas highlights the stark disparity between JBS’s actions and the challenges faced by small farmers and ranchers in competing with industrialized giants like JBS.

Kimberly Spell, Executive Director of Ban the Batistas, issued a statement in response to these latest claims, “The monopolization of the meat industry by JBS decreases market competition, impacting smaller producers who find it increasingly difficult to compete on price and market access. Local farmers struggle to compete, threatening the livelihoods of countless families dependent on agriculture. American farmers, investors, and consumers deserve better, and they deserve the truth. COP28 is a global stage for meaningful environmental change and should not be twisted into a loudspeaker in service of JBS’s own best interests.”

Ban the Batistas was launched in response to plans by JBS to list its shares through an initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange. The new coalition raises the alarm about JBS’s deceptive tactics, unifying and amplifying the efforts of countless organizations around the world that have spoken out against the detrimental impacts of JBS and warned about the implications of a U.S. public listing.
